Broke the top 100 in Amazon's Bestseller High-Tech Scifi list

A bit of a milestone for me. Both  Dead Dwarves Don't Dance and  Dead Dwarves, Dirty Deeds are in the top 100 best-selling high tech science fiction Kindle books (#64 and #67). They've been selling pretty good this month (21 and 16 copies sold, respectively, as of the 13th). I should be able to meet my goal of selling 30 copies of the novel in December.

If you'd like to help me get in the top 20, why not go review the books on Amazon? Kevin and Burritoclock already did and thanks a lot! Reviews can help me get more readers which gives me the energy to write more books quicker! ;)

Thanks to everyone who buys the book!

  1. Hi Derek, I'm also a writer from Atlanta (now living in Miami) and I've been following your blog. Congrats on your success! I also recently published on Amazon (Layton Green's The Summoner, a mystery/suspense set in Africa, with more than a hint of the occult . . . link is below). Keep up the blog, you're doing great work.

  2. Hey Derek,

Here's my question...how do you get the specific numbers on your book like that (i.e top 100 best selling high tech sci-fi). That's where I'm confused on what I'm missing.

Oh, and congrats on all the sales!

  3. Karly: Go to Amazon, click the link for "Science Fiction". There's subgenre lists; one is "High Tech". Click it. Now, in the top right corner, select "bestselling" - it will give you all high tech science fiction books in the order of their Amazon bestseller rank, which is determined by current throughput of sales (not total sales, they use an algorithm that calculates bestseller rank by comparing recent selling rates of all books).

  4. I'll check it out. My problem is I'm in the Children's category (YA) and I can only ever find the Children's bestseller list. I'll go check out if I can narrow it down more.

  5. Karly, you only show up in categories that you chose for your book when you uploaded it. If you show up in the top 100, it will list that on your Amazonn book page, right below your "Amazon Bestsellers Rank" line. If you are not in any topseller sub-lists, nothing shows up there, however.
In order to get in the top 100 of a list, I think you need to be selling a couple books a day, at least. I've only shown up twice in the last 2 1/2 months.

  6. Layton, thanks! I see your book, The Summoner has some great rankings and reviews. How long since you published it?

  7. Two days. A bit surprised myself . . . love your cover art, btw

  8. Layton, your book has been out two days and you're already up to #5775? You must have an established fan base and published before, I assume.

Check out Igor Kieryluk's website. He did my cover art. Very good stuff!

  9. Cool, thanks, I was just trying to figure out what 'categories' I fall in or if there was an easier way to find out where you ranked that I was missing. It'll be awhile before I get into the top 100 on anything, though! :D In due time...

  10. Do you have any recommendations of other authors in a similar vein as Dead Dwarves?

  11. Burrito, you can try a search for "Shadowrun novel" on Amazon. These books should have similar stories, except they mix magic and technology.

  12. Yeah, it did feel very "Shadowrun without magic". Quite different from most of the 'dark future' type worlds I've read, because of that.

Will we see more written in this world, Derek? ;)

  13. Kevin, yes, I do. If sales are good, I'll have up to four novels about Noose.

But, my next book will be a young adult SF/fantasy action/adventure.
